Board 1-007

Board 1-007

Size: 39” x 20” x 2 / 99 cm x 51cm x 5 cm

Colorful bands of reds, whites, blues, and blacks give this board a very distinctive look. Adding to its distinction are veins of amethyst and citrine within the white band.

On one edge the reds are interspersed with blues, magentas, and fine ancient sediment. The reds on the opposite edge are striated with blacks and whites.

The flowing streams of color would make an inviting coffee or occasional table. Wall mounting it, with appropriate illumination would further enhance the colors and the gemstones.

Here is a board that reads like a well written autobiography. The more you read, the more the tree reveals about its previous life in a Triassic tropical forest 225-200 million years ago.

On one side we see the part of the curve of the trunk and the cambium layer of its bark. On the opposite side we see where a large branch was growing out from the trunk. Attached at the far end of this side is a section of the ancient sediment (conglomerate) in which the tree was encased for millions of years.

In the center is a large knot where yet another branch grew. Lines of fine ancient sediment can also be seen. In other areas, small veins of quartz crystals sparkle in the light.

For a climax we see the vibrant reds and yellows for which the Chinle Geological Formation wood is renowned. Yellows and blacks striate the strong reds on the sides. In the center more blacks, along with magentas, milky blues, and whites intermingle.

What will be the setting for the “happily ever after” chapter? A residence? A commercial setting? A school or nature center? Perhaps a museum?

Board: 1-005

Size: 72” & 61” x 33” x 2”/ 183cm & 155cm x 135cm x 5cm

A log of this size does not become available very often. To give its numeric size a human scale, as a table, 4 to 6 people could comfortably sit around it.

Somewhat trapezoid in shape it has a unique presence. The deep reds are softly interspersed with yellows and blacks with touches of magenta. Whites and milky blues come into play on the end by an area showing a large knot where a branch grew out from the tree.

As a table it would be equally at home in a residential or commercial environment. Since it can withstand the onslaught of common household regulars such as oils, acids, bleach, red beet and red wine stains, Crayolas, and glue, it would make an excellent top for an island or peninsula. As a small conference table - everyone will be on time for the meetings.

The blend and flow of colors in this board is subtle and complex. Deep, rich tones of red are striated through blacks. The blacks are subtly tinged with traces of yellows, whites, grays, magentas, and blues. In one area the gray of ancient sediment can be seen among the reds.

The play of colors in this piece invites the eye to linger. As a top for a library table, peninsula, buffet, or a credenza it adds quiet elegance. It could be anchored and mortared to a wall vertically, horizontally, or perhaps even diagonally as a dramatic contrast/accent to surrounding stone or tile work.
